Robert Scoble InterviewRobert Scoble recently sat down for a lively talk with our founder, Larry Drebes about the Janrain User Management Platform. We love that Robert tells developers that “they need to consider Janrain for their user management system” because in essence, we’ve done all the work so that they can focus on changing the world with their core competencies. Plus Robert shares his own frustrations with setting up a new account at websites as the two discuss the usefulness of social login.

Social Login Preferences on Media SitesEarlier this month, we published data examining quarterly social login and sharing trends across the 365,000 websites using Janrain Engage. The data demonstrated Facebook’s position as the most popular choice for social login. But our findings also emphasized the value of choice, given that 58% of online users prefer registering on sites with a social identity from Google, Yahoo!, Twitter or other networks.

Similar to prior analyses, we have taken a sampling of sites in prominent industry verticals to measure trends in consumer login preferences. While the overall story arc is similar across these verticals, there are disparate preferences within each segment that merit attention.

iPhone Orientation2011 is wrapping up as another banner year for mobile adoption and Apple continues to sit in the center of it. Even though tough economic conditions are credited with a slight drop of their marketshare in Europe and Amazon's Kindle Fire is starting to rip into the lower end of their tablet market, Apple is still expected to move over 40 million mobile devices this quarter, setting another company record.

How we use these devices is also continuing to evolve. IBM just released some very impressive benchmarks, showing that 13.4% of online buyers on Christmas Day made their purchases from Apple iPads and iPhones this year. This is on top of a general 16% growth in online sales from Christmas Day 2010.

SEOmoz Influence of Facebook and Twitter on searchMost online marketers can tell you that the core of any SEO strategy is to optimize site content for search engines and build a network of high-authority backlinks. While search engines have long been the de facto method of navigating the web, that tide is beginning to shift. The sustained growth of social media feeds as a channel for content sharing has caused marketers to question how social signals influence search.

Perhaps the most persuasive evidence that Facebook and Twitter augment search rankings comes from SEOmoz. In April, they published some insightful correlation data demonstrating the degree to which links shared on social networks correspond with improved search engine rankings.

Haskell ScalaAt Janrain we like to use the right tool for the right job. The realm of social networking presents many challenges for implementers. There are components living in browsers, user interfaces, databases, and many web server applications. Different programming languages offer different strengths and weaknesses in each of these areas. We have found that functional programming offers significant advantages in the design and implementation of web servers. At Janrain we have been using the purely functional language Haskell, and the hybrid functional and object oriented language Scala as part of our toolbox for web servers.
