iPhone Orientation2011 is wrapping up as another banner year for mobile adoption and Apple continues to sit in the center of it. Even though tough economic conditions are credited with a slight drop of their marketshare in Europe and Amazon's Kindle Fire is starting to rip into the lower end of their tablet market, Apple is still expected to move over 40 million mobile devices this quarter, setting another company record.

How we use these devices is also continuing to evolve. IBM just released some very impressive benchmarks, showing that 13.4% of online buyers on Christmas Day made their purchases from Apple iPads and iPhones this year. This is on top of a general 16% growth in online sales from Christmas Day 2010.

Janrain has recently released the second version (beta) of our iPhone library, Janrain Engage for iPhone, which includes a greatly simplified user authentication component, as well as an extremely simple social sharing interface.

To better test our library, we are hosting a Hackfest at our downtown office on Wednesday, October 27th from 6-9 PM. If you are interested in adding our library to your iPhone application, please come, and please bring your laptop. We will walk you through configuring your application with Janrain Engage and our 17+ providers (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), adding the library to your application, and the simple API calls. We will also provide pizza and beer, and we hope that you can provide meaningful feedback.

Janrain Engage for iPhone social sharingIn a recent survey of over 1900 smart phone developers published by Appcelerator and IDC, 65% of those surveyed cited the need for social networking APIs on mobile platforms. Janrain, the user management platform for the social web, is happy to extend its support for the iPhone platform to meet this need and offer a native iPhone SDK for sharing content and activity on your apps to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Yahoo!, MySpace and other social networks.

In April, we launched native iPhone support for social login and today, we have extended Janrain Engage for iPhone to enable a user to share directly from an iPhone app to multiple social networks simultaneously. Imagine you’ve just hit your highest score on your favorite iPhone game. Now with an easy click you can share your good news with friends on Facebook, Twitter, and other online communities.

Internet users increasingly are accessing their favorite web applications through mobile phones.  As developers and publishers of iPhone applications, you can tap into this growing market by providing an easy way for your consumers to login to your apps using popular social networking or email accounts.

A few months ago we launched a beta program for Janrain Engage (formerly RPX) for the iPhone.  Thank you to our many customers who participated in the program and provided valuable feedback. Today we are excited to announce the production availability of Janrain Engage for the iPhone: a native iPhone library to allow developers to quickly add social sign-in to their iPhone app.

The mobile web has become a critical component of our online experience. That's why we are excited today to announce the release of iPhone app support for Janrain Engage. Companies and websites that offer an application for the iPhone can now use Janrain Engage for iPhone to enable quick social registration and login via Facebook, Google, Twitter, Yahoo!, LinkedIn and up to 11 additional identity providers.

Janrain Engage for iPhone includes the same key features as the web-based software. The number of identity providers displayed and the order in which they appear can be customized, and Janrain Engage remembers the user's preferred identity provider on return visits, to help ensure a positive and intuitive return user experience.
