How Pfizer used digital transformation to empower patients in 2016

Digital technology is changing the way many industries operate, but none as dramatically as life sciences. Pharmaceutical companies are playing a central role in the digital transformation of healthcare with the advancement of mobile communications, the cloud, advanced analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Empowering patients is one of the most powerful ways that digital transformation impacts the healthcare industry. And Pfizer was recently recognized as a pioneer for their patient empowerment work, receiving the Gold award for Best Medical Digital Initiative for Consumers in 2016 by Medical Marketing and Media.

Pfizer partnered with Ogilvy Public Relations and the American Lung Association to create Quitter’s Circle, a unique digital, social and mobile ecosystem designed to help smokers quit. The platform allows smokers to invite friends and family to join a quit team to keep up with the progress in real time, offer inspirational messages and receive alerts when support is needed.

So far, the company reports the results have far exceeded their goals. They have seen nearly 500,000 website visits, more than 140,000 Facebook fans, 18,500 Twitter followers and 3,300 app downloads.

Judges from Medical Marketing and Media gave Quitter’s Circle the top award for the comprehensive strategy and support available across all platforms.

Pfizer also won the Digital Edge Award 2017 from IDG Enterprise for excelling in digital transformation. Winning projects used technology to drive business innovation, including artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, virtual reality, cloud, data analytics and mobile/smart devices. Entries were judged on complexity, scale, business outcomes and innovation.
